The “Old Mill Trace” winds through the Poyen Departmental Forest on the former estate of the Beauport sugar refinery, near Poyen Mill. A pleasant hike of less than an hour over a shady trail across a planted forest of mahogany, “poirier-pays” (“pink trumpet flower”), and bloodwood trees—with their sweet-smelling flowers and exceptionally hard wood, often used for railroad ties—as well as various types of fruit trees, including the “pied pomme surette” (“star apple”), which has many medicinal properties.
