Escape Hill

Landscape - Sainte-Anne

The center of Grande-Terre is higher than the rest of the island, with denser vegetation. In sharp contrast to the western plains and plateaus of the flatter northern and eastern parts of the island, the topography of this distinct region is characterized by ancient limestone bedrock that has folded over itself under the pressure of tectonic movement. The bedrock here is arched upward (anticlinal fold), cresting in the region’s center at Morne l’Escade, Grande-Terre’s highest point (136 meters). From here, visitors enjoy a beautiful view of the wooded slopes and creole gardens of the Grands Fonds region of Sainte-Anne.
