Museum - Basse-Terre

This “culture circle” was formed to uphold the memory and work of Gerty Archimède (1909-1980), the French Antilles’ first woman attorney (1939) and member of parliament (1946). A Basse-Terre native by adoption, she was a member of the French Communist Party until 1951 and served as interim mayor of Basse-Terre from 1953 to 1956. A woman of conviction, she fought for the education and emancipation of women in Guadeloupe.
