Night Market

Local Product - Petit-Bourg

The great craft, prepared food, and farmer’s market known as “Jaden péyi Ti-Bou“ is held on the parking lot near the Montebello traffic circle every Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in a festive atmosphere of enticing colors, sounds, and fragrances. Farmers display the fruits of their harvest, because, although sugar cane and bananas are the main crops, fruits and garden vegetables, though taking up less of the island’s cultivated land, nevertheless represent a significant proportion of many small regional farmers’ produce. Piles of sweet potatoes, yams, and “cristophines” (a type of local turnip) are attractively arrayed next to inviting displays of spices, peppers, and aromatic herbs. Multiple varieties of banana are offered alongside seasonal fruits and “bottle-shaped” pineapples straight from the heights of Petit-Bourg. Cooks simmer their take-home specialties, including crab pâtés and still-steaming fish pies. Butchers, fishmongers, artisans, and craft merchants are all part of the scene.
