Monument to Freedom

Monument - Petit-Canal

Located at the top of the “Slave Steps” across from the church, this small monument (now missing its cross) commemorates the abolition of slavery of 1848. Its base is engraved with a single word: “Liberté.” As it dates from the 19th century, little information is available on this monument, although some believe that it was erected that very year (1848), which would make it the earliest monument commemorating the definitive abolition of slavery.
