The Former Arsenal

Architecture - Basse-Terre

The former artillery barracks of the Basse-Terre Arsenal (Guadeloupe - Frenche West Indies) are located at 35 Rue Dugommier and 7 Rue Rémy Nainsouta. Built in the 18th century and currently used for private residences, this vast complex covering an area of 1.6 hectares contains about ten buildings. The entrance was located near the external structures of Fort Delgrès. The land plots, façades, roofs, enclosing and supporting walls, terraces, gate, exterior scissor stairs, and piping system were classified as historic monuments by ministerial order on April 12, 2007. The Arsenal received its water supply via an arched brick aqueduct that can still be seen on Rue Dugommier street.
