Adventitious Church of Vieux-Habitants

Monument - Vieux-Habitants

Located in the Rachez Ongles district, inaugurated in April 2015, the architecture of this temple is inspired by Gothic cathedrals style.  With a facade advancing like a bow of ship, surmounted by a cross, the building stands above an esplanade forming a forecourt, where there is a porch surrounded by colonnades.
It was in the 1970s, period of the Second Vatican Council, when a real process of modernization of Antillean societies began, accompanied by the development of the tourist economy, changes in mentalities and questions about cultural identity, as new religious movements begin to emerge in Guadeloupe. Among these, Seventh-day Adventists, firmly established Guadeloupe where there are more than 50 churches.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Christian "denomination" born of an interdenominational Protestant "revival" movement led by American Baptist preacher William Miller (1782-1849). The word "Adventist" coming from the Latin adventus meaning "coming", refers to the return of Christ announced by the Bible. As for the "seventh day", it simply designates the seventh day of the week (Sabbath, Saturday) as the biblical day of rest and worship. Under the direction of his co-founders, Joseph Bates, James White and his wife Ellen White, the Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially organized in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1860, before establishing in 1863 the General Conference (World Leadership). the Adventist Church). Seventh-day Adventists are very committed to the principles of freedom of conscience with respect for public order and the dignity of the person, the separation of church and state, and interreligious dialogue. Their religion even shows a strong intransigence against all traditional magico-religious practices, still practiced in the Caribbean. With more than 18 million members worldwide, this religion enjoys a large, international presence.
