Matouba Falls

Waterfall - Saint-Claude

A charming maintained trail takes visitors to Matouba Falls. To find it, take the road to the left of the Delgrès monument, keep to the left, and travel over the shady road leading to the La Joséphine historic plantation (where poet Saint-John Perse spent his vacations). Pass a banana grove to find a wooden shelter marking the trailhead. Hike less than 30 minutes to reach the banks of the Saint-Louis River, then five minutes more, ascending to the right, to reach the falls, which flow from a cleft in the volcanic rock, turning a beautiful turquoise blue. Please note:  due to a powerful whirlpool current, swimming at the base of the falls is highly discouraged.
