Silver Basin Port

Yatching port - Pointe-Noire

In 2011, a fish market was installed at this port to allow fishermen to prepare their products for sale under sanitary conditions. In Pointe-Noire, as throughout the Côte Sous-le-Vent region, fishing is subject to certain constraints, particularly geographical ones, because the continental shelf, vertically in line with the mountainous coast, is not very broad. In fact, the distance from the shore to the 200-meter depth line does not exceed 2 to 3 nautical miles here, while on the eastern side of Basse Terre it can be between 5 and 10 nautical miles. The narrowness of the continental shelf limits productive fishing areas. The main type of boat used is the “canot saintois” (traditionally maneuverable with sail or ream, native to the Saintes archipelago). These small boats are made of local wood (pear tree, red mahogany, red gum), without a deck; they are between 3.5 and 6 meters long, with a width of 1.8 meters. For a few years now, plastic or resin boats have become more and more common. Equipped with outboard motors, varying between 9.9 and 85 horsepower (with most being between 25 and 48 horsepower), these craft are used for in-shore fishing.
