Town Hall

Architecture - Petit-Canal

On the exterior of this edifice designed by Ali Tur, note the detail in the steps leading up to the building and its low exterior wall, as well as its balconies, overhangs, eaves and cornices, tiles and pierced walls. Inside, the woodwork and interior staircase with its banister are also noteworthy. The Town Hall has been enlarged, but many original elements have been preserved. The design of the interior straight two-flight staircase is almost unique in the oeuvre of Ali Tur. Inspired by the Art Deco movement, the Hôtel de Ville of Petit-Canal is a simple, rectangular structure. In his use of reinforced concrete, an economical and highly resistant material, Ali Tur broke with local architectural tradition, which had relied primarily on wood and stone. Between 1929 and 1937, Ali Tur built 120 edifices throughout the Guadeloupe archipelago.
