The first church at this site was demolished, having grown too small, and in 1827 construction began on a new masonry building. The new structure held up against the fire that ravaged the town in 1838 (a plaque commemorates this "miracle"), but succumbed to the earthquake of 1843. The church was then rebuilt and regularly repaired following hurricanes in 1867, 1928, and 1989. The façade is currently under restoration. Inside, pause to admire the beautiful altar (19th – 20th century) and baptismal font (limestone). Produce is sold daily on the square in front of the church.
