Schœlcher Square

This busy square is a favorite with locals for Sunday strolls and photos for special occasions (weddings, communions, etc.). At its center stands a bust of Victor Schœlcher, a militant abolitionist who presided over the Commission that drafted the Decree of April 27, 1848, abolishing slavery. He was elected parliamentary deputy to represent Guadeloupe in 1849.
