Grandfond Windmill

Windmill - Anse-Bertrand

In 1764, the Dupat plantation located at this site was producing sugar, but this windmill was built afterward, perhaps by Etienne Douillard Granfond. Located here, like others on this part of the island, to take advantage of the strong easterly winds, it was constructed at the end of the 18th century from limestone rubble and mortar, and coated with chalk, while the more fragile elements, in particular the arched openings, were constructed of dressed stone. This tapered tower windmill had three openings. The largest of them was for installing the mechanism inside the windmill. A small opening for the sugar juice chute was fashioned low to the ground.
