Landscape - La Désirade

In 1993, in line with its development strategy and environmental calling, the windy island of La Désirade welcomed the department of Guadeloupe’s first wind farm. The farm consists of twenty 25-kW turbines, each of which can be folded down when hurricanes approach. It is here, in fact, that this technique was tested for the first time. Although the wind farm does not provide complete energy autonomy, it does produce a large portion of the island’s electricity. However, some of it is transferred to Guadeloupe’s main islands by underwater cable. The turbines are visible from the central plateau (“Wind Farm Trail”), an integral part of the island’s green and blue landscape.
