Massabielle church

Monument - Pointe-à-Pitre

The chapel, which was built in the 1920s as a place to worship the Virgin of Massabielle de Lourdes, was destroyed by the hurricane of 1928 which ravaged Guadeloupe. It wasn’t until 1938 that construction of Notre-Dame de Lourdes de Massabielle church was completed on the same plot up on Morne à Caille, now known as Morne Massabielle (“morne” means “hill”). The church tower is 35 m. high, and the church bells, cast in the foundries of Annecy, France were commissioned by Father Schweitzer in 1951. A staircase leads down to the grotto beneath the church: it is a replica of the grotto found in the church of Notre-Dame de Lourdes.
