Ring of Slavery

Monument - Pointe-à-Pitre

Between the Arts and Culture Center (currently undergoing renovation) and the Town Hall, you’ll find this sculpture by Henri Martin Granel, dedicated to the memory of all those “martyrs of liberty”. The memorial “ring” clearly evokes the status of a slave, but, being a broken ring, it also reminds us of the fight against slavery and the arrival of freedom. The Ring of Slavery also reminds us that, in Guadeloupe, slavery wasn’t abolished for good until 1848, thus liberating 87,500 slaves.
