The Observer

Monument - Deshaies

This monumental sculpture entitled “The Observer” is located near the Médiathèque (media library) on Rue de la Liberté. It was created in 1996 by a sculptor from France’s Brittany region, Jean-Yves Ménez. Weighing 13 tonnes and rising to a height of 3.5 meters, it delights the eye with the layered tones of its black marble and the unaltered ebony of Deshaies’ raw volcanic rock. Through the combined voices of primitive stone and African mask, this potent symbol proclaims to the world the determination of the people to tell their own story.
