Loiseau Plantation

Architecture - Vieux-Habitants

The Loiseau estate, located in Grande Rivière, is an early 20th-century coffee plantation. The property of over five hectares features a colonial house, a coffee-processing house, and one out building. The small Loiseau estate, located at the bottom of the valley, was acquired by auction in 1894 by Amédée Labique, free person of color, great uncle to statesman Gratien Candace, and already the owner of two mountain coffee plantations. Here at Loiseau, he installed coffee processing facilities. The main house was built by the carpenter Adrien Étienne in 1916. It was later bought by Raymond Guillod. The main buildings and technical facilities of the coffee plantation have been preserved, including the water wheel used for the hulling process, the coffee processing house, and the “boucan” where coffee was once laid out to dry. An episode of the television show “La Chasse au Trésor” (“Treasure Hunt”) was filmed here. Tours available – Tel.:  05 90 92 43 96. Loiseau Plantation also offers tourist accommodations:  five charming rooms with every modern convenience.
