Architecture - Sainte-Anne

Place Schœlcher (“Schœlcher Square”) was designed by Ali Tur, the famous architect dispatched to the colonies by the French government in the wake of the devastating hurricane of 1928. The wedding hall, added in 2003, has been a great success, bringing a festive atmosphere to the square (with receptions, music, etc.). Ali Tur was inspired by the Art Deco, or Modernist, movement. This architectural style is imposing yet simple, in terms of both layouts and facades, most of which feature strict symmetry. Ali Tur worked with reinforced concrete, a building material that is both economical and highly resistant but that was hitherto unknown in Guadeloupe.
