Teddy Riner Square

Monument - Vieux-Habitants

Inaugurated on August 25, 2018, this place celebrates one of the most illustrious children of Vieux-Habitants, the judoka Teddy Riner, who has become an example for the world, particularly for the young inhabitants of the commune. The world champion is indeed a native of the town where his family lives in the Beaugendre valley. On the square which was assigned the name of Teddy Riner a statue executed to the size and exact measurements of the champion by the plastic artist from Guadeloupe Jocelyn Pèzeron was erected. Teddy Riner is one of the greatest French sportsmen in activity. Double Olympic champion in the heavyweight category (+100 kg), the judoka, born on April 7, 1989, has ten titles of world champion, two gold medals at the Olympic games in London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016, a bronze medal in Beijing in 2008. He is also a five-time European champion. He plans to end his career at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. He was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2018. In this square is another illustrious man, Colonel Delgrès, hero of the resistance to the recovery of the slavery of 1802.
