Amédée Fengarol Primary School

Architecture - Capesterre Belle-Eau

Located at the corner of Paul Lacavé and Anatole Céleste streets, this recently renovated two-story school offers 13 classrooms serving approximately 280 students. The building was constructed in 1931 of reinforced concrete (framing, envelope, and roof structure) and is representative of the architectural principles adopted by Ali Tur:  U-shaped layout, simple lines, upper story with gallery protected by a solid parapet, exterior staircase with columns, surrounding wall with decorative openwork. Although the architecture of Ali Tur was resolutely modernist, it also took incorporated the dictates of the climate, incorporating natural ventilation to combat the heat and features designed to withstand hurricanes. Buildings were oriented to face the prevailing winds with large bays, venetian blinds, or trellises. Finances permitting, façades were usually protected by open galleries or awnings.
