Seaside cemetery

Monument - Port-Louis

The seaside cemetery lies along the extension of Souffleur beach. There was originally a slave cemetery on the right-hand side of the road that leads to the Démaré beaches. Before the seaside cemetery was restored in the 1960s, most of the tombs consisted of nothing more than mounds of sand surrounded by queen-conch shells or sheets of corrugated zinc. The coffins were also originally made of zinc and later, of wood.
