Godet Mill

Windmill - Petit-Canal

The windmills of Petit-Canal stand as testament to the commune’s once booming sugar industry. Constructed in the traditional manner, of stone or limestone rubble held together with mortar made from sand, lime, and traditional cane syrup, their towers rise six to nine meters above their refineries, sails facing east into the trade winds. Several relatively well preserved examples are still visible:  the mystical Dévarieux, with its crucifix in the lintel above the opening; Girard, hidden in vegetation; the imposing Godet, mounted on its base; the elegant Lubeth, with its bushy hair; and the austere Moulin de Michaux.
